The 2008 WSTFCA Convention, held January 18-19 in Everett, drew over 190 coaches from around the state. Highlights of the convention included the Class of 2008 Hall of Fame induction ceremony and the awarding of the WSTFCA Annual Awards.

Hall of Fame inductees for 2008 included Dan Blackmer (Kings HS), Jerry Russell (Lacrosse HS, Franklin Pierce HS, Green River CC, PLU) and Jim Kennet (Mt. Rainier HS, Kentridge HS). Dan and Jerry were present to receive their awards during the luncheon ceremony. Jim was in Arizona and will be presented his award later in the season.

The annual WSTFCA Awards for 2008 went to the following individuals:
Dawn Geiser (Skyline HS) - Women's Coach of the Year
Kevin Eager (Gig Harbor HS) - Men's Coach of the Year
John Crawford (Pasco SD) - Lifetime Achievement Award
Dave Bowdoin (Athletic.net) - Contributor of the Year
Bob Sund (PNWTFOA) - Official of the Year
Craig "Sideline Smitty" Smith (Seattle Times) - Media Person of the Year

With the exception of John Crawford, all the recipients were on hand to be recognized in front of their peers. John will be presented with his award at the Pasco Invite in April.

All Covention goers were treated great by the attentive staff at the Holiday Inn Everett. Plans for the 2009 WSTFCA Convention will be solidified in the next couple of months. Future plans call for the Convention to visit Spokane and possibly Wenatchee in the next couple of years.

Special recognition goes out to Rob Philips (Seattle Academy) and Daunte Gouge (Kings) for all their hard work and long hours coordinating the convention. If you are interested in becoming part of the 2009 WSTFCA Convention organizing Committee, please contact Rob (rphillips@seattleacademy.org) or Daunte (dgouge@crista.net).

WSTFCA renews it commitment
to officials proposal

The WSTFCA Executive Board, at its Fall 2007 meeting, renewed it's commitment to getting the WIAA to require certified officials for all track meets. It was decided that the WSTFCA would undertake a campaign to lobby school board presidents and school district superintendents in an effort to pass the officials proposal. The specific number and responsibilities of the officials would be dependent upon the size and level of the competition. Lane Dowell and Lawrie Robertson represented the Pacific Northwest Track and Field Officials Association and pledged their commitment to the plan as well. It was noted that there is a group of officials already in place with a curriculum to teach. Stay tuned for further news as this proposal moves forward.
