Washington/Oregon Brooks Meet of Champions 2008
Info for Event Selectors
Date: Saturday May 31, 2008
Time: 10:00 AM
Location: Kings High School Seattle, Washington
Hammer Competition: Mariner High School, Everett, Washington
Time: 9:00 AM
Selection Criteria:
It will be the goal of the Brooks Meet of Champions to have representation from all classifications in each state. For the smaller classifications in each state, one athlete may represent all the smaller classifications. All event selectors will choose four (4) athletes for the laned events and field events and six (6) athletes for the distance events (800, 1500 and 3000). In addition, at large selections will be made for specific event areas. Although selecting seniors is not required, we encourage a senior to be selected when a choice has to be made between two comparable athletes.
New for 2007 will be the confirmation of two athletes (three for the distance events) prior to the state meets. The remaining athletes for each event and the at large selections will be made after the state meets. We want to try to confirm one large school and one small school athlete. That assures us of meeting our goal of having all classifications represented.
Please note the dates below:
Confirmed Athletes Due Date: May 23, 2008
We are in the process of setting up a registration process through athletic.net
Remaining athletes chosen after State Meets: May 27, 2008 athlete confirmation date
Only those athletes that have been chosen to compete need be sent.
Please check back with this web site for athlete registration information
Rooming Information for Athletes:
Athletes are responsible for their own lodging. There are a limited number of rooms at the Lynnwood Courtyard by Marriott (http://marriott.com/hotels/travel/sealn-courtyard-seattle-north-lynnwood/) under the Meet of Champions name. The rate for the meet is $109. Make sure athletes mention the Meet of Champions when booking. The WSTFCA is not responsible for lodging for the athletes.
Athlete Social Information:
On Friday May 30, 2008, at 7:00 PM, at Kings High School, there will be a banquet honoring the athletes. Immediately following the banquet, athletes will meet as teams and receive their uniforms and instructions for the next day. Athletes and officials for the meet will receive a complimentary dinner. For all other guests, the banquet will be $10.00.
Selection Suggestions:
First Contact: Selectors may feel free to contact athletes as early in the season as they see fit. It is recommended that selectors contact athletes after the first week in April. Selectors are encouraged to use league rankings, state bests and other traditional track and field contacts to make a list of athletes to contact.
Brochures: You will also have brochures that will be provided by Brooks to distribute to athletes as you see them throughout the season.
Contact Lists: It is recommended that you start to compile a list of all athletes you contact as well as those who contact you either via the brooks web site or other methods. Try to compile as much contact info as possible (i.e. phone #, cell phone #, address, email address, parent’s contact info, school contact info, coaches contact info, etc.).
How to contact:
There are numerous ways to contact an athlete. It is always best to contact the athlete, or their parents directly. Below are some suggested contacts to make:
- Contact athlete directly at meet or invite
- Contact athlete through coach
- Contact athlete through school athletic director
- Contact athlete through school administrator (principal, asst. principal)
Attachments:
Attached to this information are some examples of communication material that has been used in the past. Please make any changes to the material to use as you see fit.
Absolutes when dealing with athletes, coaches and parents:
Make no promises to compete unless you are sure they will be one of your athletes.
Make contact and keep in touch with all athletes that contact you. It is advised that you communicate by email whenever possible. It is best to construct a distribution list with all athletes that you have communicated with or that have contacted you.
Once you have made your final decisions, please make sure that all athletes know whether they will be competing or not. We have had some problems with athletes showing up the day of the meet ready to compete because they have not been notified one way or the other. Communication is essential!
Inform athletes of the dates and times of the meet essentials (Athletes dinner, team meetings and competition). We will also need a firm count of athletes, parents and coaches for the dinner Friday night. Washington Selectors
